William R. Koenig

January 10, 1938 — March 30, 2020

William "Bill" R. Koenig, Sr., age 82, of Indianapolis, IN passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020, in Indianapolis. Bill was born in Los Angeles, CA on January 10, 1938. He was the son of Roland and Margaret Koenig (nee Schmidt). Bill moved to Indianapolis in 1968 and founded Koenig's Ceramic Tile Service. Years later on New Year's Eve in 1976, Bill decided to "ring" in the new year by marrying Ruth Hamersley. For the next 43 years, they raised a beautiful and loving family.

Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman. Every year he looked forward to taking trips to Missouri to his aunt and uncle's farm to visit his favorite cousins. Together, along with his son William, they would spend countless hours fishing, hunting and creating wonderful memories. Bill loved spending time with his kids and watching them grow up. He enjoyed coaching his daughter's softball teams and his son Kyle's football team. During the summer until the kids were grown and moved out on their own, Bill and Ruth would spend every weekend and holiday skiing and fishing on Lake Lemon and later on Van Bibber Lake where Bill and Ruth would eventually own a lake cottage. The family would spend their days having picnics on their boat named "Mama's Paycheck." Sometimes they would forget to pack flatware and relied on "Fritos" to serve as knives and forks.

Bill was a "man's man." He believed in putting in an honest day of hard work and always greeted his friends with his warm smile and "firm" handshake. Bill was very patriotic and believed in giving back to his community and supporting his country. He was especially proud of the fact that his grandson, David William Smith has been serving our country for the past 14 years in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. When Bill wasn't working or spending quality time with his family, he looked forward to the end of the day when he and Ruth would watch Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and his favorite reality show Survivor on television.

Bill leaves behind a living legacy consisting of his loving wife, Ruth Ellen Koenig of Indianapolis; daughters, Wanda Jean Jewell and husband Joe of Cape Coral, FL, Rebecca Rush and husband Les of Greenwood, IN, Christine "Chris" Marie Smith of Indianapolis, Angela Coffey of Indianapolis and Jennah Koenig of Indianapolis; sons, Jeffrey William Koenig of Indianapolis and Vincent Kyle Koenig and wife Nadeze of Wartrace, TN. Bill was also blessed to have 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and a host of additional family members and dear friends.

Along with his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his 3 sons, William Koenig, Jr., Gary Lee Koenig and Steven Ray Koenig; 2 grandsons, William R. Koenig, III and Gary Lee Koenig, Jr.; son-in-law Richard White; and brother Eugene "Gene" Moore.

Out of respect for personal and public safety during this time, the family has elected to have a private funeral service with Pastor Joel Stevens officiating. Bill will be laid to rest at the Round Hill Cemetery.
