Indianapolis - Vivian Lois Carter, 95, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022. She was born April 11, 1927 in Indianapolis to the late Theodore and Mildred Thomas Carter. Vivian was the youngest of three daughters. She attended Indianapolis public schools. In high school, she ran track and was one of the fastest runners on her team.
In 1955, Vivian moved to Detroit, MI. There, she worked various jobs in order to support her family until she eventually landed her dream job as a kitchen supervisor for St. Bonaventure Capuchin Monastery. St. Bonaventure is home to many of Detroit's Capuchin friars who have dedicated their lives to helping the poor and homeless.
Vivian loved her job and worked hard to ensure that each meal was perfectly prepared and served on time. She was loved and respected by her co-workers and the people she served five days a week and most holidays. In 1991, she retired with great fanfare. So many hated to see her go.
Vivian remained in Detroit until 2008 when she decided to return to her hometown of Indianapolis. She took up residence in the family home she grew up in. It remained her home until being hospitalized and succumbing to illness on October the twelfth.
Vivian was the mother of seven children. She was preceded in death by her sons, Rodney in 1977 and Eric in 1987. She leaves behind five other children: Leon Carter of Michigan and Larry Carter, Nila Carter, Mark Harris and Trudy Harris all of Indianapolis, IN. She was also the proud grandmother of seventeen. With so many, she would sometimes get their names mixed up. Additionally, she had forty great-grandchildren. She leaves behind so many who loved and respected her.
