Indianapolis – Richard Charles Longworth, 82, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018, after a long illness.
Mr. Longworth was born July 13, 1936 in Indianapolis, IN to Alice G. Longworth. He was raised in Fountain Square and attended Indianapolis public schools. He enlisted in the US Air Force in January of 1953 after lying about his age. He was stationed in Japan where he hung bombs during the Korean War.
In 1955, he joined the US Marine Corps where he was assigned to the 3rd Marine Air Wing at El Toro. Later, he also served with the Army and National Guard totaling twelve years of active duty military service. After his military career, Mr. Longworth drove a semi-truck for McLean Trucking, ran his own printing business, and finally an advertising specialties business from which he retired.
He married in 1971 and two children were born. In 1983, he married Nancy J. Covault and they had four children. Richard and Nancy enjoyed camping and RVing over much of the US and Canada with their Airstream trailer. On these trips, Richard would sit by the fire with the children, telling stories of his past, such as the time he was in the boat with George Washington crossing the Delaware or the time he encountered the Abominable Snowman in the Himalayas.
Richard served as an usher for the Caring Place for many years, where he was known as "The Candy Man" because he gave candy to the children when they would recite a Bible verse for him. He was active in the Republican Party all his adult life, the pro-life movement and was an accomplished cook.
Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Edgar Lee "Nick" Longworth. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; children, Dana Longworth, Leanna Longworth, Adam Longworth (and fiancé, Sophie Shelton), Faith Hoosier (Jordan), Nathan Longworth (Melissa), and Jacob Longworth; grandchildren, Caleb Longworth, Taylor Longworth, Nathan Owens, Jadon Hoosier, Alice Hoosier, Noah Hoosier, Addison Hoosier, Eli Longworth and Zane Longworth; three nieces; a nephew; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
