Richard Burkert

Indianapolis - Richard "Rick" Burkert, 77, passed away Sunday October 10, 2021. He was born September 25, 1944 in Indianapolis to the late Robert "Burkie" and Jean Burkert. Rick graduated from Southport High School in 1962. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army where he served in Vietnam for 15 months. After his service in the Army, Rick went to work for Eli Lilly and Company where he served for 32 years.

Rick loved everything cars and America. He enjoyed car shows, cruise-ins, hanging out at the Suds and attending the annual Veterans Day Parade. Upon returning from Vietnam, he purchased a blue 1967 Corvette. In his lifetime he owned 13 Ford Mustangs, the last being an award winning silver 1986 Mustang GT. Rick was an incredible friend, a proud and loving husband, father, brother, uncle and cousin. He will never be forgotten, but always missed.

Rick is survived by the love of his life his beloved wife of 39 years, Norma Jean Burkert. Their union was a love for the ages. They believed that Rick's Aunt Osamae and Norma's mother, LaVada, brought them together in heaven. Norma describes their love and marriage as magical and heaven sent.

Rick is also survived by four, fun, never boring children: Josie Kroics and her husband, Ed, Julie Denzio and her husband, Mike, John Burkert and Jeannie Burkert; brother, Ronnie Burkert and his wife, Pam; sisters, Judy Pagel and Dr. Janet Knapp and her husband, Dick; and grandchildren that were his pride and joy: Joshua (Bubbie), Michael (Albert), Taylor (Tay Tay), Jamison, Maria (Mia), Luke, Abby and Jax. When Rick became a great grandfather to: Jericho, Jurni, Daisy, Thiago (Coco), Sage Hawk and Lily, his "cup runneth over".

Rick's family will receive friends Wednesday, October 13, 2021, from 4 – 8 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. A celebration of his life will be conducted Thursday, October 14, 2021, at 11 am at the funeral home.
