Patrick Welch Kane

December 7, 1953 — September 26, 2021

Patrick Welch "Pat" Kane was born to the late Robert E. and M. Kathyleen (Welch) Kane on December 7, 1953 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He passed away on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Methodist Hospital with his loving wife JoAnn (Barr) at his bedside.

Pat was always a spirited thinker, he attended Saint Joan of Arc Church, Cathedral High School and college in northern Michigan. Never one for formal education, Pat was a voracious reader of any book he was able to get his hands on. While living in Traverse City, Michigan he developed a lifelong passion for skiing. Pat took friends and family to the slopes of just about every ski resort in the US. He enjoyed living in Texas and Colorado but returned to Indiana in 1992 and lived the rest of his life in Indianapolis. He inherited his parent's love for playing bridge and many of us learned the game with Pat, he was a patient yet intense instructor. Pat abandoned his north side roots when he met the love of his life, JoAnn. The couple fell just short of twenty years of marriage, spent entirely in JoAnn's St. Barnabas neighborhood. The two of them loved to cook together enjoying music and wine. Pat's devotion extended to JoAnn's daughter Lindsay and their absolute ray of sunshine, Caleah ("CJ" to Pat). He always found time for any niece or nephew, whenever they called! Pat's mentoring and passion for skiing lit a fuse in all of them. Pat was also the classic, loving big brother for his three siblings, Marguerite (Scott Galloway), Leo (Suzanne), and Alicia, always a good listener while never judging any of us. Of all the many things Pat did for his whole family, his ability to whisper words of training and encouragement to any dog was perhaps his greatest gift. As loyal as Pat and JoAnn were to each other, Pat was also loyal to his job of 25+ years at Welch Wholesale Florist working first in his high school days for his beloved uncle Jimmy Welch and then much longer for his two cousins Nora Welch Steinmetz and Annie Welch Horvath. Rumor's were even circulating that Pat was contemplating retirement or work reduction later this year, but I guess we will never know for sure.

In 2016 Pat and I were golfing and loving that we both had time to golf together. Well, until the first hole where we had an argument on whether to play the regular tees or the senior tees. Pat agreed to play the regular tees but moaned and groaned the entire round that the pars much less birdies were impossible from these tees. Shortly after we played, I took a lesson and told the pro about our argument and after watching me hit several balls the pro proclaimed, "Your brother is right".

There will be an Irish Wake at Welch Wholesale Florist, 1611 Aqueduct Street, Indianapolis, Indiana on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and casual attire is preferred.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association, Alzheimer's Association or the Humane Society in Pat's name would be greatly appreciated.
