Life and Legacy
Mary Dee Lawrence Mance was born in Fruitland, Tennessee on July 4, 1938 to the late Lordy B. and Ruthie Lee (Sumlin) Lawrence. In 1962, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Reverend Jake Mance. They later moved their family from Tennessee to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they shared many years of love and happiness, before his transition into Glory.
Mary was employed as a Housekeeper at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, from where she retired. She loved the Lord and was a firm believer in Jesus Christ. For more than 30 years, she was a faithful member of the Abundant Faith Missionary Baptist Church, serving in many capacities including the Nurses Ministry, Choir and Mother Board. She enjoyed reading the Bible and sharing God's word through family texts, social media and any other form of communication made available to her.
Mary, affectionately known as Mae Dee, took pride in her children, grandchildren and extended family; and has for many years been the cherished matriarch of this unit. She is known for her kindness, open heart and welcoming spirit, and has left behind a legacy of love and laughter that will forever be remembered and cherished by her family and future generations.
Mary departed this life on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at the age of 77 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Jake Mance; brothers: Robert and LT Lawrence; sisters: Hattie Lou Johnson, Marie Ingram and Willie Faye Lawrence; and stepson: Nathaniel. She leaves to cherish her memory three brothers: LB (Sadie) Lawrence and James Lawrence, both of Tennessee, and Leslie (Veronica) Lawrence of Indianapolis; four sisters: Mamie Lawrence, Imogene Cooper, Linda Nolan and Lisa Williams, all of Tennessee; three sons: Johnny R. (Helen), Charles and Isaiah (Makia) all of Indianapolis; three daughters: Mary K (Percy) and Mattie, both of Indianapolis, and LaKesha (Andre) of Lewisville, Texas; three stepchildren: Ruthie and Arthur, of Indianapolis and Jerry of Colorado; 14 grandchildren: Tina (Barry), Shawntell (Willie), Keith, Sr (Keily), NaTrina (Charles), TeLisa, Rasheta, Steven (Chantel), KaVon, Serenity, Johnna, Isaiah, Jr., Vernita, Julia, and Isabella; 29 great grandchildren, one of whom preceded her in death; and four great, great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 925 Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. Mary will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery with Graveside Services be conducted at 3 P.M. Calling will be on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
