Avon - Mary Nugent Lohman, 91, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2019. She was born February 3, 1928 in Louisville, KY to the late Parker and Marian Lucille Nugent. Mary was a graduate of Howe High School. Additionally, she graduated from UCLA in 1971 with a degree in fine art education. Prior to her retirement in 1990, she was employed by the Marion County Department of Welfare where she served as an adoption caseworker.
Mary was an avid crossword puzzle solver and a voracious reader who had the ability to make people laugh heartily. She was fiercely left of center politically and voted in every election until she was well into her 80's. She was called "Little Mary Sunshine" by one of her witty co-workers, attesting to the fact that her disposition was famously composed of cynical shadows and pessimistic valleys. But, she never gave up…ever.
Mary praised, scolded and totally loved her two daughters in life and she wailed bitterly over them after death. There is no adequate obituary for her. She was a uniquely proud spirit with no precise home in this state or planet. She loved Bob Knight (mostly) and Kurt Vonnegut Jr. That was her range.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Parker A. and Lucille Carter Nugent. She is survived by her son, Dion C. Lohman; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and one more on the way.
A celebration of Mary's life will be conducted Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 12 pm at Rick's Boatyard Cafe, 4050 Dandy Trail, Indianapolis, IN 46254.
