Greenwood - Lucille "Lucy" Abel, 77, of Greenwood, IN passed peacefully at home while surrounded by her loving family. She entered her eternal home in Heaven on July 7, 2017 at 7:20 a.m.
Lucy was born on November 28, 1939 in Weeksbury, Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains. She was a coal miner's daughter and proud of her heritage. At age 18, she moved to Franklin, IN and there she met her best friend and future husband, Richard "Red" Abel. On November 28, 1958 Lucy and Richard married and began their life together. They later moved to their home in Greenwood, IN.
Lucy was a wonderful homemaker and was always active in her daughters' activities. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, and a band booster. She enjoyed sharing stories about her childhood in the mountains. Her favorite vacation spot was the Smoky Mountains. Lucy was a born again Christian and a loving, devoted wife and mother. Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16. She is deeply missed. Her husband and daughters eagerly await the time when the Lord reunites their family and they embrace her once more.
Lucy was preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Sue; parents, Maryland and William "Charlie" Johnson; and sisters, Jean Worton and Marie Johnson. She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Richard "Red" Abel; daughters, Nancy Abel and Joy Abel-Kraft and her husband, Jeff; her "baby doll" grand dog, Pogo; sister, Rissie Branham; nieces, DeeDee Bledsoe, Judy Branham Hall, and Sherry Branham; and nephews, Kevin Burke, Jamie Johnson and Tim Worton.
A graveside service will be conducted privately at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenwood, IN.
