Kenneth Edward Young, Sr.
Indianapolis - Kenneth Edward Young, Sr., 91, passed away peacefully at Franciscan Health Hospital on August 15, 2022 with family at his side. He was born October 14, 1930 in Indianapolis to the late Orma C. and Adah (Grothe) Young. He graduated from Howe High School in 1948 and then attended Ball State University. He married Helen Joan Graebe in 1950 and celebrated 66 years of marriage before she passed away. They had three children; Kenny Jr, Kathy and Jay.
Mr. Young worked in the auto parts business. He owned and operated Key Auto Parts in Beech Grove for several years. He was known as "The Battery Man". He served in the Indiana National Guard. He served his community as a volunteer fireman and also served 4 years as the Chief of the Wanamaker Fire Department.
Mr. Young and his wife were long time members of Maple Hill United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Beech Grove Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite.
Mr. Young loved traveling with his wife. He was very proud of the fact he had visited all 50 states. He had numerous hobbies including working on cars, cruises, and playing bingo and euchre with family and friends. He liked watching his family participate in all kinds of sporting events and visiting his 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He even took flying lessons well into his eighties.
Mr. Young was preceded in death by his parents, son (Kenneth Young, Jr.), wife, brother (Richard), and sister (Alice). He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Phillips (husband Randell); son, Jay Young (wife Kimberly), and daughter-in-law Sally Young; grandchildren: Kenny (Katie) Young III, Annie Young, Bonnie Young, Billy (Becca) Young, Lyndzie Phillips, Kelszie (Evan) Morgan, Jessika (Jess) Ford, Joshua Young, Logan (Payton) Young; great-grandchildren: Gavin, Grant, Grayson, Téa, Dean, Lilah, Aliviah, Villjo, Brianna, Olive, Sloane, Caleb, Cole, with a baby boy due in October.
Mr. Young's family will receive friends on Saturday, September 3, 2022, from 10 am – 1 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 E Hanna Ave., in Indianapolis. A celebration of his life will follow at 1 pm, including a Masonic Ritual.
