Joseph John Schmidt

August 9, 1942 — May 1, 2024

Indianapolis – Joseph John Schmidt, 81, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on May 1, 2024 at home. He was born August 9th, 1942 in McKees Rocks, PA to Joseph A and Mary (Sprock) Schmidt. He was known as “Junior” to his family and “No No” to his friends and teammates in high school and college. He graduated from Stowe Rocks High School in 1960 and played basketball for Stowe Rocks Stallions and was a starter for four years. He led the team to the semi finals his senior year. He graduated from Edinboro University in 1965. Joe met his wife MaryAnn in college and they were married on August 13th, 1966 and have been married 57 years. He taught Jr. High civics for 31 years at Youngsville High School, retiring in 1996.

Joe impacted many lives over the years coaching girls’ basketball and volleyball at Warren County Christian School. He was also the treasurer for the school and his church from 1976-1996.

After moving to Indianapolis in 2003, Joe continued his love for bike riding on the Monon and around Rocky Ripple and was known by many people who saw him pass by daily. His kindness and generosity was felt by many. He gave to others in a quiet and humble way.

Anyone who knew Joe well would tell you of his funny one-liners. He was quiet in most settings, unless it involved a sporting event. His affinity for officials was well known amongst his family members. Joe was an avid sports fan. He loved Butler basketball but most of all he was a fan of his grandchildren. From football to baseball, volleyball, softball and performing arts, he was their biggest cheerleader and number one fan. His family brought him immense joy and he was an example of Christ to them. He followed the Lord diligently and had a heart that spoke no unkind words. He was loved by so many and will be missed on this earth but we rejoice and find comfort and joy in knowing he is walking (and biking) with Jesus.

Joe is survived by his wife MaryAnn; his daughters Sonna (Anthony) Dumas and Janna Young; son, Joe (Megan) Schmidt, all of Indianapolis; grandchildren, MJ, Calenia, Andre, Drew, Zani, Vaughn, Joey, Morgan, Jackson and Jameson; siblings, Marlene, Bill (Mary Ellen) and Bob; many nieces and nephews; in-laws, Donna and Murray Robinault.
