Greenfield - Joni Jan Smothers, 57, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, August 15, 2021. She was born July 1, 1964 in Martinsville, IN to the late James Wesley Huett and Anna Jean Burkett Reilly. She lovingly served her family as a homemaker. She was a member of New Life Church, the Indie Authors' Writers' Guild and Rad Rats Rattery.
It is difficult to attempt to put all that was Joni into just a few lines. Her passion was writing, but she also enjoyed photography. She loved the great outdoors and it didn't matter whether she was fishing, camping or merely soaking up the sunshine. She also enjoyed prowling thrift stores for treasures and taking care of animals, both big and small.
Whether it was crafting rich worlds and characters in her writing or decorating for Christmas (which was practically a sport to her), Joni loved creating. She enjoyed morning coffee and quiet nights at home watching her favorite shows and movies. She also loved watching sunsets on her favorite Florida beaches whenever she had the opportunity, but more than anything else, she loved her family and simply spending time with them.
Joni was preceded in death by her father, James Wesley Huett; mother, Anna Jean Reilly; stepfather (who raised her as if she were his own from the time she was ten years old), James Reilly; and brother, Benjamin Wesley Huett. She is survived by her beloved husband of 36 years, Gregory Alan Smothers; daughters: Kristin Marie Smothers, Bethany Rene Smothers and Chelsea Brooke Smothers; sisters, Jackie Jay Huett Shoptaugh and Jill Huett Ziegler; brother, David Leland Huett; and many other beloved family members and dear friends.
Joni's family will receive friends Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 10 am – 12 pm at New Life Church, 7010 East Thompson Road, Indianapolis, IN 46239. A celebration of her life will follow at 12 pm at the church. A committal service will be conducted at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Hall, IN.
