John E. Gannon

July 27, 1955 — November 2, 2018

John E. (Boomer or J.G.) Gannon Jr., 63, of Indianapolis passed away on November 2, 2018. He was born on July 27, 1955 to the late John and Marcia Gannon in Indianapolis.

The unofficial "Mayor of the Eastside" was an amazing storyteller who could take over an entire room of people at the blink of an eye. His storytelling is legendary, and each story was captivating whether it was the first time you heard it or the UMPteenth time. He was a beloved friend to many and would do anything for any of them at a moment's notice. Boomer's karaoke renditions of "Mack the Knife" and "American Pie" would regularly "bring down the house" at local east side pubs. He dedicated most of his life to coaching and refereeing sports, and touched thousands of lives in the process. He will be missed by everyone that knew him and the Eastside of Indianapolis has lost one of its finest men.

One of his proudest moments was coaching the 1984 team from Christian Park that won the runner-up trophy at the Little League Softball Major Girls World Series in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

John was a dedicated coach, player agent and umpire for over 30 years at Christian Park. He mentored many young men and women during his life. J.G. managed Metro Softball Park for nearly 20 years and received the "Hall of Fame" Membership Award from A.S.A Softball.

John is survived by his loving partner of 17 years: Deb Short and their fur babies; siblings and their spouses: Diana "2 D's" & Larry Bell, Annie & Mike Luellen, Pat & Tammy Gannon; uncles and aunts: Gary O'Connell, Pete & Linda O'Connell, Cindy & John Robertson, Karen & Ken Shockley, Mary & Joe Mattingly, nephews & nieces: Mike & Marybeth, David & Lauren, Phillip & Kristen, Kayla and Leesha; great nieces Gwen, Olive and a host of other family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 6 P.M. until 10 P.M. at Nativity Catholic Church in the Parish Center, Holy Family Room located at 7225 Southeastern Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46239.
