John W. Carrico

INDIANAPOLIS – John W. Carrico, 88, passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on March 20, 1935 to the late Don and Hildred Willis Carrico in Sullivan, Indiana.

He graduated from Sullivan High School in 1953. In 1957 John was inducted into the United States Army and honorably served his country overseas in the armored division. He received a Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter and Marksman Badge before he was honorably discharged on December 24, 1959 with rank of private first class.

John was united in marriage on September 4, 1960 to the love of his life, Redadawn Shepherd at Coalmont Baptist Church in Coalmont, Indiana. This union was blessed with sons, Chauncey and Donald.

John attended the University of Indianapolis where he received his associate’s degree in Law Enforcement. On September 17, 1963 he started his career in law enforcement working for the Plainfield Police Department serving as a patrolman. On February 1, 1965 at age 29 John joined Hendricks County Police Department as Deputy Sheriff. In 1967 he joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and was promoted to Sergeant in 1969. After 33 years of working for Marion County Sheriff’s Department he decided to work security for AES Corp. until retiring in 2021. Early in life he worked for Chrysler in Indianapolis, Indiana and RCA in Mesa, Arizona.

John collected classic cars and attended tons of car shows. He loved traveling to Denver, Colorado to visit family. John enjoyed meeting his buddies at the Heidelberg Haus Café in Indianapolis daily.

John is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Redadawn Carrico. He also leaves behind his son, Chauncey Carrico and his wife, Teresa and granddaughter, Makayla Carrico. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Donald F. Carrico who passed away at birth.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM.

Burial will take place at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Center Ridge Cemetery, 704 West Johnson Street, Sullivan, Indiana 47882.
