Jimmy Darrell Deitz

September 19, 1956 — February 23, 2024

Indianapolis - Jimmy Darrell Deitz, 67, passed away Friday, February 23, 2024. He was born September 19, 1956 in Martin, KY to the late William and Eartha Tackett Deitz. Jimmy was employed by U.S Filter in Indianapolis where he served for over 23 years.

He enjoyed watching sports, specifically baseball, football, and hockey, and always made sure to attend whichever sporting events were in season. Cubs games were his favorite. He famously was spotted at a Cubs game with his brother Danny, where the two were dubbed twin "Mike Ditka super fans" for the rest of the baseball game. Their Ditka moustaches made them famous with the announcers who would zoom back to Jimmy and Danny and say, " Da Bears!" whenever the Cubs made a great play. Jimmy loved going to Cubs games so much so, that he would travel to Chicago with his sisters Sandy and Yvonne to many of the games as well. He also enjoyed taking his great nephew Endre Adams II, whom he taught the love of baseball, and who plays travel ball still, to Cubs games in Chicago. He would then show “Lil-E” his old neighborhood every time they went. He loved to share his love of the sport with his family. Jimmy would also travel to other states to watch the Black Hawks play on many occasions. It wasn't out of the ordinary to find out that Jimmy went to Ohio to watch the Black Hawks play on any given weekend. At Thanksgiving and Christmas, football on the TV was as important as the turkey. He famously left a host house, one Thanksgiving, when the football game could not be found LOL.

Jimmy also loved to go shooting at the gun range with his bro-in-law Jerry. Jimmy loved to take his nephews to the gun range as well. Weekends in the summer would be spent at camp Atterbury or an indoor range in Indianapolis, shooting one of his or a few of Jerry's guns. Jimmy bought a motorcycle once but his sisters made him give it back because he “brought too many women home” because of it. Jimmy would say to his nephews “Chicks dig bikes”. His sisters would say, in their country twang, “The only women in your life should be us. Jimmy Deitz!" Jimmy’s sisters were very involved in his life and their connection was evident. His sister, Robbin, was his barber and would be credited for his “Ditka” look. Jimmy also had a standing “date night” with his sister, Jackie, at his favorite pizza joint…. “South of Chicago”. Jimmy was loved by everyone, especially his sisters. He truly was a good brother, but he was definitely the best uncle!

Jimmy is survived by his brother, Danny L. Deitz; sisters: Robbin G. Fowler, Jacqueline J. Villarrubia, Yvonne Richey and Sandy Richey; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, William L. Deitz; mother, Eartha Tackett Deitz; and brother, Bill Deitz.

Services will be conducted privately.
