Jim J. Allen

September 29, 1932 — February 4, 2023

Jim J. Allen, age 90 of Indianapolis passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Chalet Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Indianapolis following an extended illness. He was born in Kirksville, Missouri, the son of Herbert S. and Stella (Rager) Allen. Jim was a 1950 graduate of Kirksville High School in Kirksville. Jim married the love of his life, Iris Harris on May 16, 1952 in Kirksville, and they shared over 70 loving years of marriage together. He then went on to serve in the United States Army as the rank of Sergeant from 1952 until he was honourably discharged in 1955. Jim furthered his education and became a civil engineer. He worked for companies in Kirksville, then their family moved to Iowa, until he received a job offer from the Federal Highway Administration of Indiana in 1968. He retired after over 20 years from working as a civil engineer in Indiana.

Not only was Jim a hard worker, but he was also a loving family man. He always provided for his wife and children, and loved more than anything to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years living in Kirksville, Jim lived on a farm and he truly loved that farm life. He enjoyed working the farm and caring for livestock and cattle. Jim treasured his 4 legged, German Shepard companion, Queenie. During retirement, Jim and Iris enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and then in Pharr, Texas. More than anything, Jim loved his family and will be dearly missed.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of over 70 years, Iris Allen; daughter, Jeanie (husband Bill) Lawrence; son, Jerry (wife Tara) Allen; 3 grandchildren, Gwen Rabourn, Jared Allen and Callie Allen; 5 great-grandchildren, Maddux Rabourn, Paisley Rabourn, Nolan Rabourn, Remi Allen and Harvey Allen; several nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Lilah Mae Lay and Deloris Purvis; brother, Charley Allen; and son, Jeffrey Allen in 2013.

Jim's wishes were to be cremated and buried at a later date. Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions in Indianapolis is honored to handle Jim's cremation arrangements.
