Indianapolis - Jack James Johnson, Sr., 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, Wednesday, January 1, 2020. Jack was born February 15, 1937 in Portsmouth, OH to the late Bruce and Mary Johnson. His family described him as the one you called if you needed anything from sound advice to the complexities of tree trimming.
Jack loved to run. He raced in dozens of mini marathons and hundreds of 5 and 10Ks. He also helped set up many of the races he participated in. Jack didn't just run races, he also battled and beat cancer multiple times. He accomplished much throughout his life and along the way, he helped and inspired so many people.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 39 years, Carolyn R. Johnson.
Left to cherish and carry on his memory are his daughter, Sheryl Ann Harris; son, Jack James Johnson, Jr.; step-daughter, Ruby Little; grandchildren: Heather Carrel, Kami Harris, Angie McCoy, Sam Scahill, Estella Vandeventer, Haley Mader, Jack J. Johnson, III, Anthony Harris, Nick Harris and George Hayes, Jr.; 35 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and many other loving family members and dear friends.
Jack's family will receive friends Friday, January 10, 2020 from 11 am – 1 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. A celebration of his life will be conducted at 1 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
