Iris Ruth Newt, age 74 of Indianapolis passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at her home. She was born April 15, 1949 in Annapolis, Maryland the daughter of Levis and Harriett (Jackson) Nalley. Iris was a 1967 graduate of Decatur Central High School. After high school, she furthered her education at Ball State, Vanderbuilt, Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tennessee. She married Harold Newt in Indianapolis, Indiana. Iris enjoyed writing, shopping and was incredibly musically talented. She was well known for singing with her sisters for 18 years as a trio.
Iris was a member of the Miss Maryland State Beauty Pageant in 1965 and the Jerry Lewis Telethon in Bloomington, Indiana in 1966. The trio was the halftime entertainment for the Miss Maryland state beauty pageant in 1965 and they sang on TV for the Jerry Lewis telethon in 1966 that was filmed in Bloomington Indiana. A picture of Iris and her sisters was featured singing Winter Wonderland in red velvet dresses on the front page of the Washington DC newspaper with an inside story about their singing career.
Iris is survived by; 5 children, Heather Beemer, Candice Newt, Dustin Newt, Billy Newt and Maryellen Lanham; husband, Harold Newt; 7 siblings, Anne Landrith, Barry Nalley, Kevin Nalley, Maureen Gum, Jinnee Parr, Michael Nalley and Alfred Nalley; 6 grandchildren, Reilly Hinkle, Christian Newt, Ashley Rutoskey, Amber Rutoskey, Chelsea Rutoskey and David Lanham; and several nieces and nephews.
Iris is preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Skeeter Nalley.
Iris's wishes were to be cremated and have no formal services at this time. Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions in Indianapolis is honored to handle her cremation arrangements.
