Indianapolis – Irene Dickens Hooper, 87, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2022. She was born September 1, 1934 in Nashville, TN to the late Haskell and Dolly Lou Johnson Dickens. She attended Eastland High School in Nashville. She married her late husband, James "Red" Hooper on December 22, 1950. Mrs. Hooper worked in several different fields over the years, including as a seat belt manufacturer, but her favorite job was serving her family as a homemaker. Her hobbies included quilting and crafting. Additionally, she enjoyed travelling and loved spending time with her family.
Mrs. Hooper was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James "Red" Hooper; son, Terry Hooper; parents, Haskell and Dolly Lou Johnson Dickens; sister, Christine Cunningham; and brothers: Robert Dickens, Doug Dickens, Richard Dickens and James Dickens. She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Smith and Karen Sullivan; sons: James H. Hooper, Jr., William "Johnny" Hooper and Larry Hooper; brother, Woodrow "Woody" Dickens; 21 grandchildren; 56 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hooper's family will receive friends Thursday, August 18, 2022, from 11 am – 1 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. A celebration of her life will be conducted at 1 pm. A committal service will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
