Indianapolis, IN – Howard Lee Junior Tackett, 81, passed away peacefully at 1:52 AM on Friday, March 18, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 18, 1940 to the late Kelly and Sallie Mae (Mefford) Tackett in LaFollette, Tennessee.
Howard was inducted into the United States Army on May 23, 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a sharpshooter and was honorably discharged on June 3, 1964 while stationed at Fort Hamilton, New York. Howard was a mechanic for most of his life. Formerly, was chief mechanic for Daily's at Kitly and owned his own paint & body shop.
Howard's hobbies were fishing, mushroom hunting, singing and playing the guitar. He enjoyed old and fast cars. Howard also enjoyed listening to music and going to the casino. He loved his family, friends and little dog "Buddy". Howard was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his children, Cathy Robertson, Connie Tapp, Howard Tackett and Sally Fidler; his brother, Autry McCoy Tackett; 18 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren & 1 on the way; 6 great great grandchildren & 1 on the way; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Garnett Lee Tacket; children, Cheryl Baugh and Donald Tackett; grandchildren, Crystal Cossey and Daniel Baugh; and his aunt & uncle, Marion and Dorthy Mefford.
Howard's guests may visit from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with military honors.
Burial will take place at a later date at Friendship Park Cemetery, South Graveyard Road, Paragon, Indiana 46166.
