Helen Joan Young, 85, of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Homeview Center of Franklin. She was born in Indianapolis to Lawrence and Ida Mae "VanLue" Graebe on February 22, 1931. She graduated in the class of 1948 from Howe High School. She married Ken Young on July 23, 1950 at Victory Memorial United Methodist Church.
Joan had worked as a bookkeeper for Allied Appliances in Wanamaker and previously in sales at several department stores. She was an active member of the Maple Hill United Methodist Church, Wanamaker Fire Department Auxiliary and Franklin Township Little League Auxiliary. Joan enjoyed working with ceramics, playing euchre, bingo, traveling, and enjoyed watching her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids playing sports.
Joan is survived by her husband: Ken; daughter and son-in-law: Kathy & Randell Phillips of Wanamaker; son and daughter-in-law: Jay A. & Kimberly Young of Shelbyville; daughter-in-law: Sally A. Young of Indianapolis; grandchildren: Kenneth E. Young III (Katie), Anita "Annie" J. Young (Eric), Lyndzie N. Phillips, Bonnie L. Young, Jessika A. Ford (Jess), Kelszie D. Phillips (Evan), William R. Young (Becca), Joshua P. Young, Logan P. Young; great-grandchildren: Téa, Aliviah, Gavin, Grant, Grayson, Caleb with another great-grandson on the way; sister: Betty Mullis (Bill) of Florida; sister-in-law: Glenda Graebe; foster brother: Ben Means (Thelma) of Greenwood, and a host of other family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Kenneth E. Young Jr.; brother: Carl Graebe.
