INDIANAPOLIS – George Richard Owens, 66, passed away at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on August 9, 1957 to the late David and Shirley Lovelace Owens in Indianapolis, Indiana.
George proudly served his county by joining the United States Army and Army National Guard. While serving he earned his U.S. Army Transportation School Diploma on May 10, 1978 for completing the Aircraft Powerplant Repair Course at Fort Eustis, Virginia. Then George successfully completed the trainer’s workshop of Battalion Training Management Systems and received a certificate on December 5, 1982. He was honorably discharged on August 2, 1983 from the Army National Guard with the rank of Specialist Four. Lastly, after serving in the United States Army for a brief time, George was honorably discharged on February 16, 1992 with the rank of Private 2nd Class.
He attended Emmerich Manual High School for a short time. On September 22, 1998 George received a General Educational Development (GED) Diploma. Then he completed an A.C.E. program focused on residential wiring and received a certificate of achievement on January 14, 1999. George owned a construction business, Owens Construction and worked as a machinist at Indiana Veneer.
His hobbies were riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, writing stories, cooking and fishing. George was passionate about helping others and enjoyed feeding everyone. He cherished spending time with his family and friends. Most of all George loved his family and was a true giver.
George is survived by his loving children: Renee Pryor, George Owens II, Rubi, Nigde, Naomi, Levi, Anthony, Mathew and Yasmine; siblings: David Owens, Michael Owens, Gayle Cox, Jennifer Dennis and Anna Hurt; and grandchildren: Samantha Pryor, Cassidy Owens, Jasmine Mosley and Abigail Michael. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Owens.
George’s friends and family may visit from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM.
