Evelyn Ryder

December 25, 1948 — June 14, 2024

Evelyn (Gamble) Ryder, age 75, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2024 in Indianapolis, IN. She was born on December 25, 1948 in Hazard, KY to Ed and Laura (Napier) Gamble. Evelyn married Wayne Ryder in Indianapolis, IN.

Evelyn, also known as Big Red or Baby Red, by those closest to her, was fun and boisterous. She was loud, energetic, playful, animated and spry. She was fearless, compassionate, strong and stubborn. Her love of life was infectious and her laugh was contagious. She was the epitome of “Life of the Party”. We have all heard the cliché saying “she lit up a room”, but Evelyn truly lit up the room. She had a magnetic personality that drew you in and made you want to be near her. She had a way of making every person around her feel as though they were the most important person. In a room full of 100 people, she would take time to make every last one of them feel loved and special.

It is well known that Evelyn loved her music and to dance. She really lived by the motto “Dance like no one is watching”, that is exactly what she did. She loved to dance at family parties that was coined “Hillbilly Hoedowns” and loved the saying “I love everybody, you're next”, and that truly encapsulates the essence of who Evelyn was.

Evelyn’s love was just as big as her personality. Evelyn didn’t have to tell you she loved you (even though she would) because she exuded love from her every fiber. Her love spread deep and wide and had no limits. From the youngest being to the oldest, the rich to the poor, the saint to the sinner the family to the stranger, she loved them all equally and belonged to the Blessings of Love Ministry, that helped her share that love. Evelyn often said “If I’ve got it, you’ve got it” and she meant it.

If you were one of the few that was blessed to be called family, you knew you came second, only to God. She was their protector and their cheerleader. She was their homecoming and their safe spot to land. She was the place where family gathered to enjoy laughs, hugs, stories, dancing, chicken and dumplings and peanut butter fudge.

Along with her parents, Evelyn was proceeded in death by her siblings, Marlene Stanaford, Juanita Williams, Wanda Miller, Bobby Jean Neace, Woodrow Gamble, Billie Joe Gamble, Sharron Neace and her nephew, Billie Joe Gamble.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Sharron (Glenn) Hicks, the oldest and most responsible, Teresa Miller, the favorite, and John Fields the boy and the baby; siblings, Geneva (Honey) Fugate; grandchildren, James Ison, Stephanie Carter, Jordan Ison, Jarred Ison and Ryan Hurt and 19 great grandchildren (and 2 on the way)
