Indianapolis - Donald Eugene Pence, 72, passed away Friday, December 7, 2018 at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis.
Donald was born June 26, 1946 in Switzer, West Virginia to Herbert Pence and Rosa "Rosie" Pence (Duty). He was one of eight who grew up in rural Southshore, Kentucky where the family business included logging and tobacco farming. Donald started working full time at an early age to help support his family. Family was always very important to him. Donald and some members of his family relocated to Indianapolis in the mid-1960s, where he met his soon to be wife, Shirley Ray Rosemeyer.
Donald worked as a welder for U.S Steel and later for Herman and Company in Indianapolis, where he retired from in 2009. Donald was a true craftsman of his trade, completing vital projects for Indiana University, the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis, and Roslyn Bakeries throughout his career. Donald was extremely mechanically inclined and shared his passion and skills with his three children. He was an avid Harley rider and knife collector, and enjoyed working on projects around the house, Harley trips with Shirley, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and doggies.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill and Snook; and sister, Shug. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Shirley; daughter, Sondra Lee Hicks and her husband, Paul, of Greenfield; sons, Donald Ray Pence of Indianapolis and James Robert Pence and his wife, Abby, of Yalaha, Florida; grandchildren Andy, Kevin, Caitlyn, Emily, Audrey and Parker; siblings, Lillian "Sis" Stone and her husband, Doug of Piketon, Ohio, Doug Pence and his wife, Irma of Mooresville, Woodrow "Woody" Pence and his wife, Anne of Martinsville and Sue Pence-Hostetter of Indianapolis; and many other beloved family members and devoted friends.
Donald's family will receive friends Wednesday, December 12, 2018 from 4-8 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. A celebration of his life will follow Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 10 am at the funeral home.
