He graduated from Western Military Academy on May 27, 1956. Upon graduation, he was appointed Brevet Second Lieutenant, unassigned, Illinois National Guard. He went on to Purdue University where he studied Agriculture for a year.

Don worked in several different fields throughout his professional career, including as an over-the-road truck driver and a security and investigations officer. Don also had many hobbies throughout his life. He loved spending time outdoors and participating in activities like beekeeping and gardening. Over the years, he often canned or froze a lot of the vegetables and fruits he had grown. He enjoyed fishing, particularly with his sons and grandsons. He also loved browsing through hardware stores looking at all the different tools and gadgets.

His family described Don as a talker. He loved to be around people, such as at the Fourth of July parties he would often host for family and friends. He enjoyed reminiscing and telling stories about the many interesting memories he made throughout his life.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mary Reeder Bourff; brother, Dan Bourff; and sister, Joan Nolen.
