Beech Grove - DK Colwell Gregory, 30, died Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Golden Living Center in Beech Grove. Born in Seymour, Indiana on October 19, 1991, DK lived most of his adolescent life in North Vernon, Indiana with his mother, Melissa Ray, and his brother, Derrick Redlin. Upon graduating from Jennings County High School in the Spring of 2010, DK went on to live in other Indiana towns from Columbus, Bloomington, and eventually to Beech Grove. While in Beech Grove he was a store manager at Speedway Convenience Stores and was a loving father to his two cats, Prue and Oliver, and his dog, Tessa.
DK was preceded in death by his great grandfather, Otis Combs. DK is survived by his mother, Melissa Ray; his stepfather Gary Ray; his brother, Derrick Redlin; his stepsiblings, Paytton Skelton and Brady Ray; his grandparents, Evelyn Kirchner and Joyce and Darrel Colwell; and his great grandparents, Sally and Melvin Siggers.
DK was an amazing human, tender at heart with a fiery will and readiness to stand up when necessary; his wisdom to know when it was indeed necessary is what set him apart from most others. From a very early age his yearning for self-expression led him to the stage; from one as small as the living room floor to a stage as big as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was deeply revered as a performer and a person in general, so much so that after graduating high school he continued to work on and offstage alongside his mentor and life-long friend, Sandra Eikelman, helping with the fine arts programs in Jennings County Schools.
He served many years as an assistant director, producer, and even a playwright at times, nevertheless always as a mentor for the JC youth yearning to express themselves through the fine arts. Away from work he loved spending time with friends and going to amusement parks with friends and family. At home, DK enjoyed cooking and spent many evenings recording make-up tutorials. All the while he loved and cared for his three pets: two cats, Prue and Oliver, and his dog, Tessa. DK will live on in all of us just as the wind blows in Autumn–at times quietly, at times ferociously, but indeed constantly, as was the life he lived and the manner in which he changed us all.
DK's family will receive friends Monday, December 20, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m.
