Derek Wayne Bailey, a beloved father, grandfather, partner, and friend, passed away on September 23, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 8, 1958, in Castro Valley, California, to Robert Pickens and Barbara Ann (Stanger) Bailey, and lived a life full of service, love, and kindness.
Derek proudly served as a Health Care Specialist in the United States Army for an impressive 23 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant His dedication to his country was matched only by his commitment to his family and community. Derek's military service was a significant part of his identity, demonstrating the values of duty and honor throughout his life.
After graduating from San Carlos High School in 1977, he pursued higher education, earning a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Austin Peay State University. This academic accomplishment was just one reflection of his relentless pursuit of knowledge and personal betterment.
Known for his funny and kind spirit, Derek lived by the mantra, "Do the right thing." This philosophy guided him, whether he was working tirelessly in the military, volunteering at the Faith United Church of Christ Food Pantry, or simply making those around him smile. His passion for fitness, showcased by his love of running and working out, culminated in a proud achievement: earning his certified personal trainer certificate at the age of 65. This feat was a testament to his belief in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, inspiring those around him to do the same.
Derek's legacy lives on through his three children, Brett, Tara, and Brandon Bailey, as well as his beloved grandchildren, Delila and Holden Bailey. They were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. His siblings, Gary and Randy Bailey, carry forward the memory of a brother who was always there for them with unconditional love and support. He is also lovingly remembered by his partner, Nancy Baker, whose presence in his life brought him joy and companionship.
He is predeceased by his son, Kirk Bailey, whose memory remains a cherished part of Derek's life story. The bond they shared continues to resonate within the hearts of those who knew them both.
