Carol R. Walker-Powers, age 81 of Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis following a brief illness. She was born March 22, 1941 in Indianapolis the daughter of John and Thelma (Dietz) Downton. Carol worked in the warehouse for Lane Bryant and later U.S. Corrugated Box Company for many years. She then worked as a powder coater. She enjoyed going to church and worshipped at Calvary Temple Church and most recently Church 52. Carol married Harold Powers and they spent more than 10 years living in Florida. Over the years, she enjoyed traveling especially to Florida, with the most recent memorable trip to Florida being with Marcia. She liked camping, sitting out by the campfire, swimming, shopping, reading, and in her youth she was a terrific roller skater. Carol was always known to "stir the pot" a little extra and would always had a great sense of humor. She loved her dog, "Baby Girl" and spending time with her family. Carol had a true heart of gold and always found time to spend with everyone. More than anything, Carol will be remembered as a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend to all who knew and loved her.
Carol's is survived by her daughter, Marcia (husband Ronnie) Sandlin; 5 siblings, Doug Downton, Wesley (wife Sherrie) Downton, John Downton, Frank Downton and Danny (wife Tracy) Downton; 2 grandchildren, Jeremy (wife Becky) Walker and Michelle Smythe; 6 great-grandchildren, Emily Walker, Alex Walker, Angel Martin, Jayden Emery, William Emery and Amayah Marsh; great-great-grandson, Kayden Hayes; step-daughter, Diana Brindley; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family members.
Carol was preceded in death by her father, John Downton; mother, Thelma Kirkwood; step-mother, Joann Downton; husband, Harold Powers; 2 sons, Brad Walker and Bruce Walker; brother, Bill Downton; and granddaughter, Natalie Walker.
A funeral service celebrating Carol's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Newcomer Funerals, Cremations & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227 with family members officiating. Burial will follow the service at Washington Park East in Indianapolis. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 26, 2022 prior to the service at the funeral home.
