Indianapolis - Carmon K. Rankin, 96, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2018.
Mr. Rankin was born February 17, 1922 in Perryville, AR. He was drafted into the US Navy in 1944. He served as a 3rd class painter during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was employed in the ice cream business from the time he was discharged from the Navy until he retired in 1972. During this time, he began his career in the manufacturing of ice cream and then moved to vending. He and his sons started an ice cream truck business which was called Diamond R Ice Cream. The company was later rebranded Sons Wholesale.
Mr. Rankin enjoyed hunting with his sons and later in life found a love for fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow. He played and traveled in Senior Softball from the age of 64 until he was 86. He made many lifelong friends. He won 2 back to back senior softball world series. He played for the Kids and Kubs traveling team for several years based out of Florida. In 2017, he was able to participate in the Indy Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. with his son, Carl. He enjoyed attending many Osmond's concerts and The Wright Brothers Band concerts.
Mr. Rankin outlived both of his parents and all four of his siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Becky Rankin; children: Ed Rankin (wife, Kathleen), Dan Rankin (wife, Barb), Carl Rankin (wife, Patsy), Kaye Triplett (husband, Bob), Christy Smith (husband, Matt); 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren (with one more expected in November); one great great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats, Gracie, Harley and Hayley.
Mr. Rankin's family will receive friends Friday, October 5, 2018, from 1 – 4 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. A celebration of his life will follow at 4 pm at the funeral home.
