Betty Catherine Durrett, a beloved member of the Indianapolis community, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2025, in her hometown, surrounded by her devoted son, David. Born on June 4, 1948, in Indianapolis, Betty was a lifelong resident, known for her serious demeanor tempered with a lively sense of humor that brought joy to those around her.
Betty was a proud graduate of Manual High School, receiving an education that would serve her well throughout her life. She dedicated her career as a clerk at the Marion County Public Library, where her passion for literature and reading flourished. Those who knew her can attest to her deep appreciation for books and how she enjoyed sharing that love with others.
Beyond her professional life, Betty cherished the simple pleasures that brought joy and happiness. She was an avid fan of crossword puzzles, often solving them while listening to the soulful melodies of Elvis music, a passion that added rhythm to her everyday activities. Betty’s greatest joy, however, came from spending quality time with her family and friends, nurturing relationships that enriched her life profoundly.
Betty took immense pride in her family, whom she considered her proudest accomplishment. She is survived by her son, David Steinmetz; her granddaughters, Jaela Tarver and Alyssa Steinmetz; her grandsons, Aaron Steinmetz and Zachary Steinmetz; and her great-grandson, Zen Thomas Joseph Steinmetz. Each member of her family held a special place in her heart, and she will be deeply missed by all.
In 2019, the family suffered the loss of Betty’s daughter, Tammy Sharp Fanelli, a passing that deeply affected Betty. Throughout her life, Betty demonstrated strength and grace in the face of adversity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her.
As we remember Betty Catherine Durrett, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family. Her legacy will continue to inspire and bring comfort to her loved ones as they carry her memory forward.
